He was trained by his father in the art of painting and went on to work in Antwerp and Paris, where he was heavily influenced by the work of Flemish still-life painters such as Jan Davidsz de Heem and Willem Kalf. He is known for his meticulous and intricate still-life paintings that often feature an abundance of luxurious objects, such as exotic fruits, flowers, glassware, and silverware.

De Heem's style is characterized by his use of light and color, which he used to create a sense of depth and luminosity in his paintings.
