Velazquez - Villa Medici in Rome

This rare landscape was painted in the summer of 1630, when Velazquez lived in the Villa Medici, Rome, copying ancient statues (note the Sleeping Ariadne in the background), according to Pacheco.

Dated by some scholars 1650-51, it is more probably the precedent for works executed around 1635 (see the background of the Surrender of Breda). It may be identified as one of the four small landscapes (of which three are in the Prado) acquired for the King in 1634 by Villanueva.

Although the symmetrical disposition, centered on the arch in the background, connects the painting with the Venetian tradition, especially with Paolo Veronese, in one aspect it reveals itself as an ancestor of modern landscape. The protagonist of the canvas, in fact, is the filtering of light through the trees to the figures, the architecture and the ground. A momentary, passing 'impression,' an instant of luminous vibration, is caught among the infinite changes of colour and summer warmth in the quiet of a midday hour. Between artist and landscape a reciprocity and intimate continuity of relationship are established, by which one seems to penetrate the other in a conjunction that exalts the poetry of a moment.
