Dutch Rococo Painter

Frans van Mieris was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in Leiden in 1689. He was a member of the Leiden Fijnschilders, a group of fine painters who specialized in highly detailed still life and genre paintings. Van Mieris was known for his ability to create highly finished, illusionistic paintings that often featured complex composition and lighting. He was also a prolific painter of portraits, and was especially well-known for his small-scale depictions of wealthy merchants and members of the Dutch bourgeoisie. Van Mieris died in 1763 in Leiden.

Van Mieris was trained in painting by his father, Willem van Mieris, who was also a painter. He learned the techniques of the Leiden Fijnschilders and became one of the most prominent members of the group. He was influenced by the work of Jan Vermeer, and his paintings often show a similar attention to detail, light, and color.

Van Mieris was highly sought after in his lifetime and was commissioned by wealthy patrons to paint portraits and still lifes. He was also an accomplished etcher and produced a large number of prints throughout his career. His works can be found in many prominent museums and galleries around the world, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Louvre in Paris, and the National Gallery in London.

In addition to his painting, van Mieris was also a highly respected art collector and dealer. He was a member of the Leiden painters' guild and played an active role in the artistic community of his time. He had a significant impact on the development of Dutch painting in the Golden Age and is considered one of the most important artists of his generation.
