Sophonisbe (Artemis)
In this work of the artist's early maturity, the basic research into light makes use of figural pretexts (silks, gold, brocades, metals, veils, jewels) to multiply the opportunities for an excited drama of light and shade and for drastically contrasted colours. But in the figure of the old woman in the background to the left there is a fabric of pure luminous touches, a synthesis of form that reduces appearances to a vibration, a sort of metaphysical beam, predicting the late masterpieces of the artist.
