The Judgment of Paris by Rubens
Formerly listed in the palace inventories of 1666 as by Rubens, then removed from his catalogue by various scholars, the work is today again assigned to the artist and dated no later than 1605, thus belonging to his Italian period. In the classical reminiscences of the figures - though transformed by sumptuous colour - Rubens composes the two groups in front of a distant Arcadian landscape. It is one of the first instances of his presenting the triumph of his feminine ideal in a Southern light: an exuberant and ardent image of his love of life.
