Acquired with the Crozat collection in Paris, 1772.
The portrait entered the Hermitage as a work by Titian. Some art historians later ascribed it to Padovanino. At present it is again believed to be a Titian. The closest analogy to the Hermitage canvas is the Portrait of a Woman in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The Hermitage piece may be dated to the 1530s. X-ray analysis has revealed over-paintings distorting the contours of the face and hands, as well as some interesting alterations made by the artist. Originally the woman was hat-less and her hair ornamented with strings of pearls quite similar to those worn by the girl in the Vienna portrait. The model for both portraits was the same young woman who sat for the Urbino Venus (Uffizi Gallery, Florence), painted about 1538.
