Jacques-Laurent Agasse was born on April 10, 1767, in Geneva, Switzerland. He was the son of a clockmaker and showed a talent for art from a young age. After receiving his initial training in Geneva, he went on to study in Paris and then traveled extensively throughout Europe. In 1798, Agasse moved to England and quickly became popular with the country's wealthy aristocracy, who commissioned him to paint portraits of their horses and dogs.

Agasse was known for his meticulous attention to detail, which is evident in his paintings of animals. He was also skilled in capturing the character and personality of his subjects, which helped to make his portraits of horses and dogs particularly popular. In addition to his portraits, Agasse was also known for his landscapes, which were often painted in an idealized, romantic style.
