Museum Boymans van Beuningen
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is an extremely many-sided museum. Wandering through its galleries you will journey through the history of art, from the Middle Ages until the present day.
Touch screens
For those who want to take a plunge into the museum’s collection, there is the Digital Depot, where works of art of the most varied nature hang side by side. You will find out all sorts of things about the objects and paintings presented by tapping on a large touch screen.
Old Masters
The atmospheric and intimate galleries of the Van der Steur Building from 1935 feature works by artists such as Hieronymus Bosch and Peter Paul Rubens, top works such as Bruegel’s Tower of Babel and Rembrandt’s Titus. In this part of the museum you can also see the genesis of Impressionism and Modernism, with works by among others Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Kees van Dongen and Piet Mondriaan.
Dali and Duchamp
The museum houses a collection of prominent Surrealists, which from 2003 onwards can be seen in the newest wing. Your imagination will be stirred by the intriguing paintings of Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst and Man Ray. Films can also be viewed, as well as objects, extraordinary books and a number of readymades by Marcel Duchamp.
Contemporary art
Through works by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Donald Judd, Joseph Beuys and others, you will experience the diversity of modern art, from austere and minimal to exuberant and provocative. Modern art does not stay indoors: from the restaurant you can see the museum garden filled with large sculptures.
Objects / Design
The Arts and Crafts and Design collection includes precious jewellery as well as everyday objects, such as old crockery or modern office equipment. Many of the utensils can be seen in paintings in the rest of the collection. For instance, you can see the real plates and spoons used in a Jan Steen painting.
