Alte Pinakothek
The Alte Pinakothek is an art museum situated in the Kunstareal in Munich, Germany.
Alte PinakothekIt was founded by Ludwig I of Bavaria and built by Leo von Klenze. It became exemplary for museum buildings in Germany and Europe after its inauguration in 1836. It was destroyed severly in WWII but was reconstructed and reopened to public in the late 1950s.
The museum houses an expanded collection of European painting from the 14th to 18th century with works from Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Tintoretto, Sandro Botticelli, Albrecht Altdorfer, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein the Younger, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Bartolomé Estéban Murillo, Diego Velazquez, El Greco, Tiepolo, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Canaletto and many others. Therefore it is one of the most important collections of old masters in the world.
The name (old Pinakothek) aludes to the time period covered by the art - the Neue Pinakothek covers 19th century art and the recently opened Pinakothek der Moderne exhibits modern art. All galleries are part of Munich's "Kunstareal" (the "art area").
