Butler Institute of American Art
The Butler Institute of American Art, located on Wick Avenue in Youngstown, Ohio was the first museum to feature exclusively American art. It has been operating pro bono since 1919.
The Butler is particularly well-known for displaying the Winslow Homer painting "Snap the Whip", which is in their permanent collection. The museum also features a fantastic southwestern Native American gallery (which was the personal collection of Mr. Butler), the Washington wedding, and the premier Youngstown steel strike piece. The gallery of modern art features a lifesize painting titled "Americans," which is colorfully striking, and transcends time despite its blatant 1960s cultural revolution perspective.
In recent years, the Butler has expanded, constructing a new wing devoted strictly to technology and art. They also opened an ecclectic, yet classic cafe', Winslow's, named in honor of the painter of their most famous artwork (Winslow Homer).
