The canvas is one of a number produced by the artist at end of the 1550s, such as Mars, Venus, Flora and Cupid and Two Lovers in the Guise of Venus and Mars Being Crowned by Victory (both in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna), and Diana the Huntress with Two Nymphs (formerly in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden). All are similar in compositional arrangement, painterly technique, and color range. The female type is common to all the paintings - a young, fleshy woman with luxuriant hair, attired in a robe with numerous folds. Also alike are the images of Mars and Cupid. In the opinion of art historians the affinity of these canvases with works of the Fontainebleau school serves to confirm supposition that at the end of the 1550s Bordone made a journey to France.
