Die Landschaftsmalerei ist eine Kunstgattung, die Szenen im Freien wie Berge, Wälder, Flüsse und Gärten abbildet. Die Geschichte der Landschaftsmalerei reicht bis in die Antike zurück, mit Beispielen aus der altägyptischen, griechischen und römischen Kunst. Im Mittelalter wurde die Landschaftsmalerei hauptsächlich als Hintergrund für religiöse Szenen verwendet, und erst in der Renaissance entwickelte sich die Landschaftsmalerei zu einem eigenständigen Genre.

In der Renaissance konzentrierten sich die Künstler mehr auf die natürliche Welt und begannen, mit Perspektive, Licht und Schatten sowie atmosphärischen Effekten in ihren Landschaften zu experimentieren. In diese Zeit fällt auch der Aufstieg der topografischen Malerei, die genaue Ansichten bestimmter Orte wiedergibt. In dieser Zeit schufen Künstler wie Leonardo da Vinci und Albrecht Dürer ikonische Landschaftsgemälde.

Das Goldene Zeitalter der Niederlande im 17. Jahrhundert brachte einen Trend zu Landschaften, die eher genrehaft und weniger topografisch waren, mit Szenen aus dem Alltagsleben und Landschaften mit sanften Hügeln, Wasserwegen und Windmühlen. In dieser Zeit entwickelte sich auch der Stil des "holländischen Lichts", der sich durch eine leuchtende, hochtransparente Qualität des Lichts und eine Vorliebe für sonnige Himmel auszeichnete. Maler wie Jan van Goyen und Jacob van Ruisdael wurden für ihre realistischen Landschaften bekannt.

Im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert führten die Romantik und das Interesse am Erhabenen in Kunst und Literatur zu einer Konzentration auf dramatische, ehrfurchtgebietende Landschaften. Maler wie J.M.W. Turner und Caspar David Friedrich setzten dramatisches Licht, Farben und Formen ein, um in ihren Landschaften ein Gefühl von Ehrfurcht und Dramatik zu erzeugen.

Die impressionistische Bewegung des späten 19. Jahrhunderts zeichnete sich durch eine lockere Pinselführung, eine helle Farbpalette und die Betonung der flüchtigen Effekte von Licht und Atmosphäre aus. Impressionistische Landschaften, wie die von Claude Monet und Pierre-Auguste Renoir, stellten oft das moderne Leben dar, mit gemächlichen Szenen von Parks, Gärten und der Landschaft.

Im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich die Landschaftsmalerei weiter und diversifizierte sich, wobei viele Künstler die Grenzen des Genres durch neue Stile und Techniken verschoben. Einige bemerkenswerte Beispiele sind die abstrakten Landschaften von Künstlern wie Mark Rothko und Joan Mitchell sowie die fotorealistischen Landschaften von Richard Estes und Ralph Goings.

Insgesamt blickt die Landschaftsmalerei auf eine reiche und abwechslungsreiche Geschichte zurück und spiegelt die sich wandelnden Einstellungen und Sichtweisen verschiedener Kulturen und Zeitabschnitte wider.
