Saturn Devouring one of His Sons: one of Goya's most terrible visions of inhuman violence and of the liberation of destructive instincts, which were the torment of the artist's last dark years. In this case, too, he had recourse to Rembrandt's summary, torn compositions and the brushstrokes sustain the artist in the drastic compression of the image and its impressive emergence from the timeless night. The technique expresses a savage fury of slaughter and self-destruction. Starting from a sunny climate, Goya endured a long interior journey which arrived at these revelations of the savage and ferocious depths of man, where conscience is overcome and reason is annulled.
