Portrait of Marie de' Medici by Rubens
Painted by the artist in Paris, in 1622 or 1625, this extraordinary symphony in black, white, rose and blond was executed with lightning speed. The picture was left unfinished by the artist, as seen in the exposed ochre ground and around the collar and above the head, where he kept the sketch of a trefoil solution, indicated with rapid strokes of black. From these emerges, like a flower, the head with its delicacy of tone and the very white transparent lace.
