Acquired with the Barbarigo collection in Venice, 1850.
The painting is executed in the broad, sweeping brushstrokes characteristic of Titian's late period. It was apparently done in several stages: the seams joining the three pieces of canvas are easily perceptible, and one cannot help noticing that the lower part of the composition lacks the finish of the rest of the picture. In the nineteenth century the painting was thought to be incomplete and for that reason it was excluded for a long time from the Hermitage exhibitions. In 1866 Liphart discovered it in a storeroom, but it was not until 1892 that the picture was displayed in the museum. At present the St. Sebastian is recognized as one of the finest creations of Titian's late period.
