"Christ Carrying the Cross" was painted in the late 1560s. A replica is in the Prado, Madrid.
The canvas has some later additions, evidently not made by the artist; they are considerable at the top and at left. Th parapet in the picture is also a later addition.

X-ray photographs reveal that the Christ Carrying the Cross was painted over an earlier composition portraying Christ Pantocrator. The paintings found in Titian's studio after the artist's death and sold by his son, together with the house, to the Barbarigo family, with whom it remained, along with other Titian works, until it was bought by the Hermitage. Nevertheless, expert opinion concerning the Hermitage canvas has long been divided. It was only in 1967, that the authorship of the great Venetian came to be generally accepted.
