American Hudson River School Painter

Alfred Thompson Bricher was an American painter and illustrator, born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in April 1837. He was one of the last of the Hudson River School of painters, a group of artists who focused on the natural beauty of the American landscape. Bricher was known for his landscapes and seascapes, which were often characterized by their luminous colors and attention to detail.

Bricher began his career as an illustrator and worked for several magazines, including Harper's Weekly. He later turned to painting full-time and became known for his views of the New England coastline, particularly the rocky cliffs and crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. He was also known for his paintings of New York City and the surrounding area.

In addition to his paintings, Bricher was also known for his illustrations for books and magazines, including illustrations for works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and was also a member of the American Watercolor Society.

Bricher continued to paint and exhibit his work throughout his lifetime, and his paintings are highly prized by collectors today. He died in New York City in September 1908.
