1640-1719

Dutch Baroque Painter

Jan Weenix was a Dutch painter who lived from 1642 to 1719. He was born in Amsterdam, the son of the painter Jan Baptist Weenix, and he studied under his father before becoming a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1664.

Weenix is known for his still-life and landscape paintings, as well as his hunting scenes, which often featured dead game and hunting dogs. His works were highly sought after by collectors and patrons, and he enjoyed great success during his lifetime.

In addition to his painting, Weenix was also a dealer in art and antiques, which allowed him to acquire an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and other objects that he used as models for his own work.

Weenix's style was heavily influenced by the Italianate painters of the time, particularly the works of his contemporaries Jan van der Heyden and Adriaen van der Velde. He is also noted for his use of light and shadow, which gave his paintings a sense of depth and realism.

Today, Jan Weenix's works can be found in museums and private collections around the world, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Louvre in Paris, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
