Melchior d'Hondecoeter (1636-1695) was a Dutch painter of the Baroque era, born in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He was primarily known for his paintings of birds and fowl set in lush landscapes and gardens. He is considered one of the most important Dutch bird painters of the seventeenth century.
D'Hondecoeter was the son of the Dutch painter Gijsbert d'Hondecoeter and the grandson of the Flemish painter Gillis d'Hondecoeter. He was trained in his father's studio and later worked in the studio of the Dutch artist Jan Baptist Weenix. D'Hondecoeter was also influenced by the works of the Flemish artist Frans Snyders, who specialized in still life and animal painting.
