He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and later taught at the Vkhutemas school of art and design in Moscow.
Petrov-Vodkin's work is characterized by a unique combination of classicism and modernism, as well as his use of vibrant colors and dynamic compositions. Some of his most famous works include "Bathing of a Red Horse" (1912) and "Student" (1916). He also created murals for public buildings and worked on numerous monumental paintings.

He was also skilled in traditional painting techniques, such as oil painting and fresco, and often incorporated elements of Russian folk art and iconography into his work.
Petrov-Vodkin was a socialist and a strong supporter of the Bolshevik Revolution, and his political views are often reflected in his art. He believed that art should serve the people and be accessible to all, and he worked to promote the role of art in Soviet society.
In addition to his artistic career, Petrov-Vodkin was an influential teacher and mentor to many young artists. He taught at the Vkhutemas school in Moscow, and his students included some of the leading artists of the Russian avant-garde.
