Flemish Baroque/Rococo Painter
Jan Frans van Dael (1764-1840) was a Flemish painter known for his still-life paintings of flowers and fruit. He was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and began his artistic training there under the painter Andries Cornelis Lens.
Van Dael moved to Paris in 1785, where he became a successful still-life painter and exhibited at the Paris Salon. He also worked as a designer for the famous French porcelain manufacturer Sèvres, creating designs for plates and vases.
In 1802, van Dael returned to Antwerp, where he continued to paint still-lifes of flowers and fruit. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and was appointed court painter to the Prince of Orange.
Van Dael's paintings were highly sought after by collectors throughout Europe, and he received commissions from wealthy patrons in France, England, and Germany. His work was known for its meticulous attention to detail and its use of bright, vivid colors.
Van Dael had a significant impact on the development of still-life painting in the 19th century, and his influence can be seen in the work of later artists.
Van Dael's sons, Floris and Pieter, also became successful painters of still-life and flower paintings. Jan Frans van Dael died in Antwerp in 1840, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful and influential paintings.
