The figures on the far left are reminiscent of Titian, who was so often interpreted by Rubens. In the last phase of his career, Rubens expressed a powerful avidity, rather than nostalgia, for life, which was reinforced by the presence of his children and of his very young wife. The pictures that he left in his estate, including this one, are almost entirely devoid of suggestions or requirements common to official commissions. They appear to have been executed to express his ardent inspiration through mythological themes, which allow in the compositional movement and in the wealth of opportunity for light and colour, an agile, flowing execution, reflecting life in every figure and gesture, especially in the female nudes - tremulous and warm in the moving air. The supposed collaboration of Jan Wildens in the animals and landscape does not alter the work as a whole, which is surely from Rubens' hand.
