Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish painter and diplomat whose altarpieces, mythologies, and portraits gave Baroque painting a powerful language of movement, color, and physical presence. He was born in Siegen, where his family lived after leaving Antwerp to escape religious persecution. His father, Jan, was a lawyer with Calvinist sympathies; Rubens himself grew up Catholic. After his father’s death in 1587, his mother, Maria Pypelincks, brought the family back to Antwerp. There he studied Latin and classical literature before briefly serving as a page in an aristocratic household. His artistic training took him through the workshops of Tobias Verhaecht, Adam van Noort, and Otto van Veen. The last, a humanist as well as a painter, encouraged the combination of scholarship and practice that shaped Rubens’s career. In 1598 Rubens qualified as an independent master in Antwerp’s painters’ guild.

In 1600 he departed for Italy, entering the service of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. Venice introduced him directly to Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto; in Rome he studied ancient sculpture, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Caravaggio. He copied extensively, gathering compositions and poses that he would transform rather than simply repeat. The duke sent him to Spain in 1603 with gifts for the royal court, an early assignment combining painting with diplomatic service. His Equestrian Portrait of the Duke of Lerma presents the armored statesman riding toward the viewer, with a battle unfolding behind him. Back in Italy, Rubens painted Genoese aristocrats, including the Marchesa Brigida Spinola Doria, and secured the high-altarpiece commission for Rome’s Santa Maria in Vallicella. When the first canvas proved difficult to see in its intended setting, he replaced it with paintings on slate.

News that his mother was seriously ill drew him north in 1608, but she died before he reached Antwerp. He stayed, and in 1609 became court painter to Archduke Albert and the Infanta Isabella, rulers of the Spanish Netherlands. His appointment allowed him to live in Antwerp rather than Brussels and accept other patrons. That year he married Isabella Brant, the daughter of a humanist and city official. Rubens and Isabella Brant under the Honeysuckle shows the couple in fine clothes, their right hands joined. They had three children. For his Antwerp home, Rubens designed Italian-inspired additions that accommodated a substantial workshop, library, and art collection. Sculpture and paintings belonged to his domestic surroundings as well as his professional resources.

Large church commissions soon established his position. The Elevation of the Cross, made for Antwerp’s Church of Saint Walburga, turns the raising of Christ’s cross into a concentrated display of bodily effort. In The Descent from the Cross, commissioned for the cathedral in 1611, figures carefully lower the pale body against a white cloth and dark background. Both works served the Catholic renewal associated with the Counter-Reformation. Their scale also required organization: Rubens directed assistants who developed his designs, while his own contribution varied from finishing selected passages to painting an entire picture. Anthony van Dyck became an important collaborator. Independent specialists also joined particular projects; Frans Snyders painted the eagle in Prometheus Bound, while Jan Brueghel the Elder was both a frequent artistic partner and a close friend.

Demand exceeded the space available in the workshop. In a letter of 1611, Rubens reported having turned away more than a hundred prospective pupils, including relatives. He was equally attentive to the circulation of his images beyond Antwerp. Engravers such as Lucas Vorsterman reproduced his compositions under his supervision, and he sought legal privileges in several territories to protect those designs against unauthorized copying. His school friend Balthasar Moretus, who headed the Plantin-Moretus publishing business, commissioned book illustrations and title-page designs. Rubens also designed tapestries. His architectural interests found another outlet in Palazzi di Genova, published in 1622, which made Genoese palace architecture available to northern European readers.

During the early 1620s, Marie de’ Medici commissioned a cycle celebrating her life for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. Completed in 1625, it joined recognizable people and political events with Olympian gods and personifications. In The Presentation of the Portrait of Marie de’ Medici to Henry IV, the prospective marriage becomes a matter of divine approval as well as dynastic calculation. A companion cycle devoted to Henry IV remained unfinished. Rubens worked on these royal projects while continuing major commissions at home, including the cathedral’s Assumption of the Virgin. Personal losses accompanied this public success: his daughter Clara Serena died aged twelve in 1623, and Isabella Brant died in 1626.

Diplomacy increasingly took him away from his workshop. Acting for the Infanta Isabella, he helped pursue peace between Spain and England. During his Madrid stay of 1628-1629, he befriended Diego Velázquez and returned to Titian’s paintings, making numerous copies from the royal collection. In London he presented Charles I with Minerva Protects Pax from Mars, also called Peace and War. Its opposition between the benefits of peace and the threat of armed conflict gave pictorial form to his negotiations. Philip IV had ennobled him in 1624; Charles I knighted him in 1630. His English connections also brought the commission for the Banqueting House ceiling at Whitehall, a celebration of the reign of James I.

Back in Antwerp, Rubens married Helena Fourment in 1630. He was fifty-three and she was sixteen, the daughter of a prosperous merchant. In correspondence, he explained his preference for a wife outside the nobility in terms of preserving his freedom. Helena appeared repeatedly in his paintings, most intimately in Helena Fourment in a Fur Wrap, known as Het Pelsken, where a dark fur garment frames her exposed skin. In 1635 he bought the estate of Het Steen and spent increasing amounts of time in the countryside. His later landscapes, including Landscape with a Rainbow, gave broad skies, fields, trees, and rural labor an importance distinct from his court commissions. Gout troubled his final years. He died in Antwerp on May 30, 1640, and was buried in Saint James’ Church.

After his death, Rubens’s color and handling of flesh became touchstones for artists including Antoine Watteau and Eugène Delacroix. His influence extended through paintings, drawings, prints, and the work of collaborators, rather than through a single school. The Medici cycle is now in the Louvre; the Prado in Madrid and Munich’s Alte Pinakothek also hold major groups of his paintings. Antwerp’s cathedral preserves monumental religious works in a church setting, where their scale and the height from which their figures address the viewer remain essential to the experience.
