"The Rainbow Landscape" was painted at the end of his life when Rubens was living in his country residence at Het Steen. The contrast between the two halves of the composition, a sunlit prosperity of the left and a gloomy wood on the right, suggests an analogy with the Last Judgement, the rainbow representing the Ark of the Covenant.
