1881-1942
Canadian Post-Impressionist Painter
Clarence Gagnon was a Canadian painter and printmaker who was active in the early 20th century. He was born in the province of Quebec in 1880 and went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Clarence Gagnon was an important figure in the development of modern art in Canada. He was part of a generation of artists who were influenced by the Impressionist movement, and his work reflected a keen eye for color and light. In addition to his landscapes, Gagnon was known for his scenes of rural life in Quebec, which depicted the everyday activities of the people who lived there. These works were characterized by their lively brushwork and strong sense of composition, and they provided a glimpse into a way of life that was rapidly disappearing at the time.
He was a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Gagnon passed away in 1942, but his works continue to be recognized and appreciated as important examples of Canadian art.
Throughout his career, Gagnon was recognized for his contributions to the arts. He received several awards and honors, including the Jessie Dow Prize from the Art Association of Montreal and the Jessie Dow Prize from the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Today, his works are held in the collections of numerous museums and galleries, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. They continue to be widely admired and provide an important glimpse into the development of modern art in Canada.
