Belgian Neoclassical Painter

François-Joseph Navez (1787-1869) was a Belgian neoclassical painter. He was born in Mons and studied under Jacques-Louis David in Paris. Navez was one of the prominent painters in Belgium during the 19th century and was known for his portraits, historical paintings, and genre scenes.

Navez was a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium and was appointed as its president in 1844. He was also a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Navez was awarded several honors during his lifetime, including the Order of Leopold from King Leopold I of Belgium.

Navez's works are characterized by their dramatic composition, attention to detail, and use of light and color. He was influenced by the works of classical artists such as Raphael and Michelangelo, as well as by contemporary artists such as Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
