French Baroque Painter

Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743) was a renowned French portrait painter of the late Baroque period. He is best known for his grandiose portraits of French aristocrats and royalty, which are characterized by their formal, theatrical style and attention to detail.

Rigaud was born in Perpignan, in the south of France, in 1659. He showed an early aptitude for drawing and painting and was trained in the workshop of his father, a painter and sculptor. At the age of 18, he moved to Montpellier to study with the painter Jean Ranc.

In 1681, Rigaud moved to Paris to establish his career as a portrait painter. He quickly gained a reputation for his skill in capturing the likeness and character of his sitters, and his clientele included many of the leading figures of the French court.

In 1701, Rigaud was appointed as the official portrait painter to King Louis XIV, a position that he held for the rest of his life. He painted numerous portraits of the king and his family, as well as of other members of the royal court. His portraits were highly prized for their accuracy and attention to detail, and they were often used for official purposes, such as diplomatic gifts and propaganda.

Rigaud's portraits are notable for their grandiose, theatrical style, which was characteristic of the Baroque period. He used rich colors, elaborate costumes, and dramatic poses to create a sense of drama and spectacle in his paintings. His portraits were also characterized by their attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of clothing and accessories.

In addition to his work as a portrait painter, Rigaud was also a skilled draftsman and etcher. He produced a number of drawings and prints, many of which were preparatory studies for his paintings.

Hyacinthe Rigaud died in Paris in 1743, at the age of 84. His legacy as one of the greatest portrait painters of the Baroque period has endured to the present day, and his works are still admired for their technical skill, attention to detail, and dramatic style.
