1593-1652
French Baroque Painter
Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) was a French Baroque painter who was renowned for his masterful use of chiaroscuro, a technique that uses strong contrasts of light and shadow to create a dramatic effect.
De La Tour was born in the town of Vic-sur-Seille in the Lorraine region of France. He was the eldest son of a baker, and it is believed that his family had some degree of financial security. As a young man, he was trained in the studio of the local painter, Jacques Bellange, who was known for his Mannerist style.
De La Tour's early works show the influence of Bellange's Mannerist style, but he soon developed his own style, characterized by the use of strong contrasts of light and shadow. He is best known for his religious paintings, which often depict scenes of everyday life, such as The Cheat with the Ace of Diamonds and The Fortune Teller.
In the 1630s, De La Tour's career was disrupted by the Thirty Years War, which brought turmoil to the region. He moved to Paris in 1639 and gained the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu. He painted a number of works for the Cardinal, including The Penitent Magdalen and St. Joseph the Carpenter.
De La Tour's later works show a greater interest in naturalism and realism. He continued to use chiaroscuro, but his paintings became less dramatic and more contemplative. He died in Lunéville in 1652, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest French painters of the 17th century.
De La Tour's work was largely forgotten after his death, and it was not until the 20th century that his paintings were rediscovered and recognized for their importance. Today, his works can be found in many of the world's greatest art museums, including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art.
In addition to his influence on the Baroque style, De La Tour's use of chiaroscuro had a profound impact on later artists, including Caravaggio and Rembrandt. His work continues to be celebrated for its technical mastery and emotional depth.
