Austrian Academic Classicism Painter
Friedrich von Amerling was an Austrian portrait painter born on April 14th 1803 in Vienna. He became one of the most important portraitists at Viennese court during 19th-century Viennese court life.
Amerling's father was a gold- and silversmith who provided a comfortable upbringing for his family. Friedrich's interest in art was evident from an early age, and he was initially tutored by the painter Hubert Maurer. Later, he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of acclaimed artists like Johann Peter Krafft and Joseph Mössmer.
Amerling traveled to London in 1824 in order to study under Sir Thomas Lawrence, and upon returning home quickly gained fame as one of Austria's foremost portrait painters - especially among Austria's Imperial family and aristocracy, whom he produced many striking paintings for.
Amerling was honored with an appointment as court painter by Emperor Ferdinand I in 1835, solidifying his fame further. His style featured rich color palettes, precise character development, and psychological depth in portraying subjects. Additionally, Amerling became well-known for his genre paintings which depicted everyday scenes while offering keen insights into human nature.
Amerling's work was widely recognized during his life. In 1882 he received the Golden Cross of Merit and two years later Emperor Franz Joseph I awarded him baron status.
Amerling's later years were marred by personal loss and declining health; his wife Anna passed away in 1868 while he suffered from a heart condition himself, eventually succumbing to it himself on January 14, 1887 in Vienna.
Friedrich von Amerling's legacy lives on today with his works being displayed at museums all around the world, such as Vienna's Belvedere Museum and Budapest's Museum of Fine Arts. His influence can still be felt today within portrait painting as one of Austria's premier 19th-century artists.
