Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was a prominent Russian-Armenian painter who lived from 1817 to 1900. Aivazovsky was born to a family of merchants in Feodosia, Crimea, and showed a natural talent for art at a young age. He was initially self-taught, but later received formal training at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
