1746-1828
Spanish Rococo/Romanticism Painter
Francisco de Goya was a Spanish painter born in 1746 in the city of Zaragoza. He is considered one of the most important artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and a major figure in the transition from the late Baroque style to the Romantic movement.
Goya was born to a lower-class family, but rose to prominence through his artistic talent. He trained as an artist in Zaragoza and later in Madrid, where he became a court painter for King Charles III and later King Charles IV. He also produced religious paintings, as well as tapestries for the royal palace. However, as he grew older and witnessed the horrors of war and political upheaval, his work became increasingly critical of society and its institutions.
In addition to his paintings, Goya is also known for his etchings and aquatints, such as the "Caprichos" and "Disasters of War" series, which offer satirical and critical commentary on Spanish society and politics.
Goya's work was both celebrated and criticized during his lifetime, and he was known for pushing the boundaries of traditional art. He experimented with new techniques and styles, and often used dark colors and dramatic lighting to convey mood and emotion.
His later works, such as the "Black Paintings," were created late in life and were not meant to be seen by the public. They were painted directly onto the walls of his home and were only rediscovered after his death.
Goya suffered from deafness in his later years and retired to the countryside, where he continued to paint until his death in 1828. He left a legacy of works that are considered landmarks in the history of Western art, and his influence can be seen in the work of later artists such as Édouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, and Francis Bacon.
Today, Goya is considered one of the greatest painters of all time, and his work continues to inspire artists and influence the development of modern art.
